権利

RIGHT（けんり）[/raɪt/]名詞

解説

存在する、実行する、あるいは所有する正当な権威。
すなわち、王たる権利、隣人に施す権利、麻疹（はしか）にかかる権利、
その他同類のもの。

これらの権利のうち、第一のものはかつて、
神の意思から直接派生すると万人が信じていた。
そしてこのことは、啓蒙された民主主義の領域の外、
すなわち「異教徒の地」（partibus infidelium）においては
今なお時に断言される。

アベドネゴ・ビンク卿の次の有名な詩句がそれである。

では、王国の支配者はいかなる権利によって統治するのか。その地位と権力の認可は誰のものか。神の意に反して、玉座に居座り続けたり、大統領の椅子で安全に誇示したりできる者は、ロバのように頑固だろう。存在するものはすべて神聖な権利によってそうなのである。起こることはすべて、神がそう望んでいるのだ。まったく！神の計画を愚か者が妨げたり、悪党が抵抗したりできるなら、それは驚くべきことだ！もしそうなら、神は（悪気はないが）過失相殺の罪を負うことになる、と私は言おう。

最後の「過失相殺」は、
現代の法律用語だが、ここでは
神の計画に人間の愚かさや悪行が
影響を与えうるなら、それは
神側にも落ち度があるという
皮肉として使われている。
