風刺

SATIRE（ふうし）[/ˈsætaɪər/]名詞

解説

著者の敵の悪徳と愚行を、不完全な優しさをもって
詳述する、今や廃れた文学の一種。

この国において、風刺は病的な、頼りない存在でしかない。
なぜなら、その魂は機知（ウィット）にあるが、
我々はそれを悲しいほど欠いているからだ。

我々が機知と誤解するユーモアは、
すべてのユーモアと同様に、寛容で同情的である。

さらに、アメリカ人は「創造主によって」悪徳と愚行を
豊かに授けられているにもかかわらず、
これらが非難すべき性質であるとは、一般に知られていない。

それゆえ、風刺家は世間では意地の悪い悪漢と見なされ、
その犠牲者が共同被告を求める叫びは、
国民的な賛同を呼び起こす。

アメリカでは風刺が成立しにくい。
それは、本来風刺の魂である
機知（ウィット）に欠け、
ユーモアをそれに間違えるからだ。

このユーモアは寛容で同情的で、
対象を深く攻撃しない。

また、人々は自身の悪徳や愚行を
非難されるべき性質だと
認識していない。

そのため、風刺家は世間から
「意地の悪い悪漢」と見なされ、
風刺の標的となった者が反撃すれば、
国民の支持を得る。
風刺の精神はアメリカでは機能しない。

An obsolete kind of literary composition in which the vices and follies of the author's enemies were expounded with imperfect tenderness. In this country satire never had more than a sickly and uncertain existence, for the soul of it is wit, wherein we are dolefully deficient, the humor that we mistake for it, like all humor, being tolerant and sympathetic. Moreover, although Americans are "endowed by their Creator" with abundant vice and folly, it is not generally known that these are reprehensible qualities, wherefore the satirist is popularly regarded as a sour-spirited knave, and his ever victim's outcry for codefendants evokes a national assent.
