痛烈な皮肉だ。

当時、キリスト教が他宗教や
無信仰者を「異教徒」と
見下していた風潮がある。

ハウイソン教授がユダヤ教徒を
異教徒と断じる発言は、
その傲慢さを象徴している。

だが、続く詩は、教授のような
「寛容」を説きながらも
裏で他人を裁く偽善も、
作者自身の排他的な態度も、
まとめて笑い飛ばす。

真の蒙昧さとは、
見えているものを拝む者より、
自分と異なる信仰を持つ者を
無差別に叩く姿勢にあると
ビアスは突きつけるのだ。
