RICH（かねもち）[/rɪʧ/]形容詞

解説

怠惰な者、無能な者、不経済な者、
嫉妬深い者、そして運に見放された者たちの
財産を、会計処理を条件として
信託により預かること。

これが、人類の同胞愛が最も論理的な発展と
率直な主張を見出す、
地獄界に蔓延する見解だ。

中流世界では
「善く賢い」と解釈される。

「地獄界」の視点は、
当時のアメリカ社会に広がっていた
巨大な富の集中に対する
シニカルな見方だ。
慈善家や篤志家として
振る舞う大富豪たちを、
無能な者から搾取した財産を
「管理している」にすぎない、と
冷ややかに風刺している。
「中流世界」の解釈は、
富がそのまま道徳的な善や
知恵の証だと見なす、
当時の一般的な価値観を
皮肉っている。
