十字架

CROSS（じゅうじか）[/krɔːs/]名詞

解説

古代からの宗教的な象徴である。

キリスト教の最も重要な出来事と
結びつけられてきたが、
実際には何千年も前に遡る。

古代の性崇拝における
「アンク十字」と同一視されたこともあり、
その由来はさらに原始的な儀式にまで
追うことができる。

今日では、
純潔の象徴としての「白十字」や、
戦時中立を示す「赤十字」がある。

ガサラスカ・ジェイプ神父は
これを題材に竪琴を奏でた。

善良であれ、善良であれ！と清らかな合唱で姉妹団は叫び、罪から遠ざけるため、さまざまな魅力を我々の前でひけらかす。しかし、なぜ、なぜ、誰も目にしたことがないのか、あの愛らしく魅力的な振る舞いをし、若々しい優雅さと、可愛らしい顔つきでホワイトクロス旗をなびかせている彼女を？さて、我々の行いを改善するために演説や長文の文書が必要なのだろうか？人間を救うためのよりシンプルな計画は（だが、そもそも彼は救う価値があるのか？）、諸君、彼が自分を悩ませる悪しき考えから逃げるのを拒み、法を藁くずのように無視し、罪を犯したがるとき、彼にそうさせないことだ。

ビアスはこれを主題に
女性たちの道徳的な振る舞いを
皮肉たっぷりに描いている。

「善人であれ」と合唱する彼女たちが、
罪を遠ざけるために
自分たちの魅力を利用している構図。

これは、当時よく見られた
表面的な道徳規範と、
人間の本能的な欲望との
矛盾を風刺したものだ。

最後の一節、
「救う価値があるのか」という問いは、
人類の救済という大義への
冷笑的な視点を示している。

Original

An ancient religious symbol erroneously supposed to owe its significance to the most solemn event in the history of Christianity, but really antedating it by thousands of years. By many it has been believed to be identical with the crux ansata of the ancient phallic worship, but it has been traced even beyond all that we know of that, to the rites of primitive peoples. We have to-day the White Cross as a symbol of chastity, and the Red Cross as a badge of benevolent neutrality in war. Having in mind the former, the reverend Father Gassalasca Jape smites the lyre to the effect following:
