人のそばに棲むことの多い動物で、 家畜化に対する原始的な感受性をわずかに備える。 古き動物学者たちは、かつての隔絶生活によって得た「従順の名残」を信じていた。 だがスーザン・B・アンソニー以降の時代の博物学者は、 その隔絶を知らぬゆえに、それを否定する。 そして曰く―― 創造の夜明けに吠えた獣は、今も吠えている、と。 この種はすべての猛獣の中でもっとも広く分布し、 グリーンランドの「香辛の山」からインドの「道徳的海岸」まで、 世界の隅々に棲みついている。 通称「狼女（ウルフマン）」は誤りで、実際は猫の一類。 その動きはしなやかで優美、とりわけアメリカ種（Felis pugnans）は雑食で、 しゃべらぬよう躾けることもできる。 ―― バルタザール・ポーバー

An animal usually living in the vicinity of Man, and having a rudimentary susceptibility to domestication. It is credited by many of the elder zoologists with a certain vestigial docility acquired in a former state of seclusion, but naturalists of the postsusananthony period, having no knowledge of the seclusion, deny the virtue and declare that such as creation's dawn beheld, it roareth now. The species is the most widely distributed of all beasts of prey, infesting all habitable parts of the globe, from Greenland's spicy mountains to India's moral strand. The popular name (wolfman) is incorrect, for the creature is of the cat kind. The woman is lithe and graceful in its movement, especially the American variety (felis pugnans), is omnivorous and can be taught not to talk. Balthasar Pober
