たいてい人間の近くに住んでおり、 飼い慣らされることにある程度の 素朴な感受性を持つ動物。 年長の動物学者の多くは、 かつての隔離状態で獲得された ある種の退化した従順さを認めているが、 ポストスーザン・アンソニー時代（※）の 博物学者たちは、その隔離を知らないため、 その美徳を否定し、創造の夜明けに 見られたものとして、 「それは今も吠えている」と断言する。 この種はすべての捕食動物の中で 最も広く分布しており、 グリーンランドの香辛料の山々から インドの道徳的な岸辺まで、 地球上のすべての居住可能な部分に はびこっている。 一般的な名称（ウルフマン）は間違っており、 この生き物は猫の仲間である。 この女性は動作がしなやかで優美であり、 特にアメリカの変種（felis pugnans）はそうである。 雑食性であり、話さないように教えることができる。 ―― バルタザール・ポーバー

An animal usually living in the vicinity of Man, and having a rudimentary susceptibility to domestication. It is credited by many of the elder zoologists with a certain vestigial docility acquired in a former state of seclusion, but naturalists of the postsusananthony period, having no knowledge of the seclusion, deny the virtue and declare that such as creation's dawn beheld, it roareth now. The species is the most widely distributed of all beasts of prey, infesting all habitable parts of the globe, from Greenland's spicy mountains to India's moral strand. The popular name (wolfman) is incorrect, for the creature is of the cat kind.
