異常

解説

標準に順応するな。
思考や振る舞いにおいて
独立していることは異常だ。

異常であるものは憎悪されるべきだ。

ゆえに、辞書編纂者は、
平均的な人間に、本人自身よりも
厳格に似るよう努めることを勧める。

これに到達した者には、平和、
死の展望、そして地獄の希望が与えられる。

アメリカの南北戦争後、
社会の均質化を求める
圧力が強まった時代だ。

ここでいう「平均的な人間」とは、
大多数の思考や価値観を意味する。
これに倣うことが
社会的な平和を得る道とされたが、
それは個性を殺し、
自立した精神を「異常」と断じて
排除しようとする空気への痛烈な皮肉だ。

多数派に逆らえば、
地獄の希望という形で
筆者は破滅を予見している。
