が幅を利かせる当時の価値観
に対する皮肉だ。

この時代、勤勉と不屈の精神
は成功への絶対条件とされた。
しかしビアスは、凡庸な人間が
努力によって手にする成功を
「不名誉」と切り捨てる。

説教家たちが叫ぶ「忍耐」も、
結局は自身が叫び続けるための
忍耐にすぎない。

有名な「兎と亀」の寓話を用い、
競争から離脱し、平和な休息
を選んだ兎こそを真の勝者
として描き、無益な競争や
無批判な努力を嘲笑している。
目標を忘れ、人生の安寧を
選ぶことの価値を説いた。
