ヨブが言及した巨大な水生動物。

ある者は鯨だと推測するが、
スタンフォード大学の著名な魚類学者
ジョーダン博士は熱烈に主張する。
それは、巨大なオタマジャクシ
（Thaddeus Polandensis）、あるいは
ポッリウィグ――Maria pseudo-hirsuta――
の一種であった。

再定義した皮肉な一節。

スタンフォード大学の博士や
専門書を引用する手法は
いかにも学術的だが、
その結論はあまりにも滑稽だ。

聖書や古典の権威ある言葉を
わざと軽蔑的に扱うことで
当時の権威主義的な学問や
知識人を嘲笑している。
これがビアスの真骨頂だ。
