夢に見た――丘の上に立つ私。 眼下を行き交うのは敬虔なる群衆。 安息日の衣に身を包み、 信心ぶった、しかつめらしい顔。 教会の鐘は一斉に鳴り響き、 罪人にとっては火災報知器のごとく。 そこに一人、痩せた長身の人物。 白衣をまとい、静かな顔で見下ろす。 その眼は陰鬱な光を放っていた。 『神の加護を、旅人よ！』と私は叫んだ。 『その服装は遠方の者を示している。 だが願わくば、ここにいる敬虔な人々のように、 あなたもキリスト者であってほしい』 彼は眼を上げ、冷然と答えた。 その厳しさに私は赤面した。 『何だと？　私がキリスト教徒だと？ 違う――私はキリストそのものだ』 ―― G.J.

One who believes that the New Testament is a divinely inspired book admirably suited to the spiritual needs of his neighbor. One who follows the teachings of Christ in so far as they are not inconsistent with a life of sin.
