喪失

LOSS（そうしつ）[/lɔs/]名詞

解説

我々が持っていたもの、
あるいは持っていなかったものを奪われること。

したがって、後者の意味では、
敗北した候補者は
「選挙に負けた（lost his election）」
と言われる。

また、高名な詩人ギルダー氏は
「理性を失った（lost his mind）」
と言われる。

しかし、この言葉が前者の、
より正当な意味で使われているのが、
あの有名な墓碑銘である。

付記

ここにハンチントンの灰が久しく横たわる。彼の損失こそ、我々の永遠の利益だ。なぜなら、彼がその権力を振るっている間は、彼が得たものは何であれ、我々の損失だったからだ。
