ある日、ある戯け者が――何を思ったか―― 暗号“RAT”の一文字を入れ替え、それを神の名だと言い出した！　するとたちまち、奇怪な司祭や信者たちがわき上がり、見せ物、神秘、茶番、賛歌、手足を不自由にするほどの論争を繰り広げた。彼らは神殿を守り、火を絶やさず、律法を説き、糸を操った。群衆は驚きつつも儀式に列し、理解できぬものをすべて信じ、芸術によって髪の毛半分をこう結合すると、自然な毛よりも美しく価値あると悟らされ、犠牲の饗宴に菓子と酒を持ち込み、祭司たちを養うために衣服を売り払った。
