北軍も南軍も、勇敢さという美徳を
プロパガンダで称揚していた時代だ。
兵士の「勇気」とは、
虚栄心や義務感、あるいは一か八かの
「賭博師の希望」から成り立つ
合成物にすぎないという、
ビアスの皮肉が込められた言葉だ。
特に、臆病風に吹かれた旅団長が
「これ以上勇気を見せれば敵と衝突する」
と述べる場面は、
軍隊の論理に対する痛烈な風刺である。
