解説

偶像を崇拝する者たちが、
破壊行為に十分な満足を得られず、
彼が「取り壊すだけで再建しない」、
「引き倒すだけで積み上げない」と
猛烈に抗議する相手。

哀れな者どもは、
彼が頭蓋を叩き割って消し去った偶像の代わりに、
別の偶像を欲する。

「お前たちはいかなる偶像も持つ必要はない。

単なる像だけではない

彼が標的とするのは
時代遅れとなった制度や
盲目的な信仰がもたらす
古い権威や迷信である

この時代
古い価値観が崩れゆく中で
既存のものを破壊し
「何もいらない」と主張する姿勢は
破壊者か改革者か
賛否両論を巻き起こした

特に社会の変革期には
現状維持を望む者たちから
「ただ壊すだけ」と非難されやすい
しかし彼は
「無用の長物」を捨て去ることで
真の自由をもたらそうとする

A breaker of idols, the worshipers whereof are imperfectly gratified by the performance, and most strenuously protest that he unbuildeth but doth not reedify, that he pulleth down but pileth not up. For the poor things would have other idols in place of those he thwacketh upon the mazzard and dispelleth.
