当時の絞首台は
公開処刑の場であり、
見せ物的な要素があった。

奇跡劇（ミステリー・プレイ）の
舞台としての言及は、
絞首台が死を越えた
「昇天」を連想させるという
皮肉を込めた表現だ。

また、ビアスの時代には
恩赦や証拠不備による
死刑回避が少なくなく、
その件数の多さを揶揄している。
これは司法制度への
懐疑的な視点を反映したものだ。
