ある王が激情のあまり片目を失った。 家臣たちはすぐに真似をして、 王の前に出るとき片目を閉じた。 王は怒り「ウィンクした者は皆殺しにする」と誓った。 どうすべきか？　家臣たちは悩んだ。 片目を閉じれば死刑、 だが両目を開ければ王よりよく見えてしまう。 彼らが涙ながらに嘆いていると、 医師が彼らを慰めた。 布切れに膠を塗り、片目に貼ったのだ。 こうして廷臣全員が貼りものをつけ、 王の怒りは静まった。 これが「絆創膏（court-plaster）」の起源―― 少なくとも私の作り話でなければ。 ―― ナラミー・ウーフ
