例外の中に規則の証明を見るという、
あの知性によって、
行為の賢明さはその結果、成果によって
判断される。
これは不滅のたわごとだ。

行為者がそれを行った際に持っていた
光によって判断されるべきものだ。

結果（OUTCOME）という言葉には、
一種の皮肉がこめられている。

多くの人は、
何か行動を起こしたときの賢明さを、
その結果がどうだったかで判断する。

特に、例外的な成功を見て
「やはり正しいやり方だった」と
結論づけがちだ。

しかし、これはくだらない考え方だと
ビアスは断言する。

本当に大切なのは、
行動した本人がその時点で見えていた
情報や意図、つまり「光」である。

結果がすべてという考えは、
判断の責任を放棄する行為にすぎない。
目先の結果に惑わされるな。
