酒に浸る
解説
飲み干す、浴びる、飲む、一気にやる。
個人としては、大酒飲みは軽蔑される。
だが、大酒飲みの国民は
文明と権力の最前線にいる。
酒好きのキリスト教徒に立ち向かう場合、
禁酒のイスラム教徒は
鎌の前の草のようになぎ倒される。
インドでは、牛肉を食らい、
ブランデー・アンド・ソーダをがぶ飲みする
十万の英国人が、同じアーリア人種に属する
二億五千万の菜食主義の禁酒家を
征服下に置いている。
ウイスキー好きのアメリカ人が、
いとも簡単に節制するスペイン人を
その領土から押し出したのは、
何という優雅さであろうか！
古来より、ベルセルクが
西ヨーロッパ全土の海岸を荒らし回り、
征服した港で泥酔していた時から、
状況は変わっていない。
酒を飲みすぎる国民は、どこでも、
かなりよく戦うが、あまり正しくない
ということが観察されている。
ゆえに、アメリカ陸軍から酒保を廃止した
尊敬すべき老婦人たちは、
国家の軍事力を実質的に増強したことを
正当に誇ってよい。

When pitted against the hard-drinking Christians the abstemious Mahometans go down like grass before the scythe. In India one hundred thousand beef-eating and brandy-and-soda guzzling Britons hold in subjection two hundred and fifty million vegetarian abstainers of the same Aryan race. With what an easy grace the whisky-loving American pushed the temperate Spaniard out of his possessions! From the time when the Berserkers ravaged all the coasts of western Europe and lay drunk in every conquered port it has been the same way: everywhere the nations that drink too much are observed to fight rather well and not too righteously. Wherefore the estimable old ladies who abolished the canteen from the American army may justly boast of having materially augmented the nation's military power.
