彼は己の手で倒れ、 大きな樫の木の下に。 彼は異国を旅し、 彼女に理解させようとした―― 「サラバンド」と呼ばれる舞踏を。 だが彼はそれを「スカラベー」と呼んだ。 午後のあいだずっとそう呼び続け、 彼女――もしそう呼ぶなら後宮の光――は ただ笑みを浮かべ、何も言わなかった。 おお、その身体は月光に凍りつき、 美しく横たわっていた。 「スカラベー」のために死し、 遅すぎた回想のために倒れたのだ。 ああ、運命よ！ 彼はその場に葬られ、 やがて来る日を待ちて眠る。 荘厳なる「状態」にて。 そして二つの可能な駄洒落が、 月に酔った目で、蒼ざめて、 墓を見下ろし、そして去った。 「スカラベー」のために死す！ ―― フェルナンド・タップル
