ここでいう「手が届く範囲」とは、
単に物理的な距離だけでなく、
社会的、経済的な機会のことだ。

当時の貧しい人々にとって、
成功や豊かな生活は
いくら手を伸ばしても
届かない場所にあり、
その不満や諦念が
この定義には込められている。

貧困層の行動や選択が
いかに制限されていたかを示唆する。
