創造より以前に存在した、
とうてい想像しがたい状況下で生きた、
実験的ながらも不満足な種族の一つ。

メルシウスは、彼らが「虚空」に棲み、
魚類と鳥類の中間のようなものだと
信じていた。

知られているのは、
彼らがカインに妻を提供し、
神学者たちに論争の種を与えた
という事実だけである。

プレ・アダムとは、聖書に登場する
アダム以前に存在した人類を想定する
神学上の仮説を指す。

この概念は、特に１７世紀以降、
聖書の記述と、当時発見され始めた
古代の遺物との矛盾を解消しようとする
人々の間で論争の的となった。

ビアスの時代、進化論の台頭もあり、
聖書の文字通りの解釈を揺るがす
これらの古代の人類（プレ・アダム）の
存在は、知識人にとって大きな関心事
であったのだ。

カインの妻がどこから来たのか
という素朴な疑問への答えとしても
機能した。

Original

One of an experimental and apparently unsatisfactory race of antedated Creation and lived under conditions not easily conceived. Melsius believed them to have inhabited "the Void" and to have been something intermediate between fishes and birds. Little is known of them beyond the fact that they supplied Cain with a wife and theologians with a controversy.
