ダビデが「人は皆うそつきだ」と言ったとき、 うそつきのデイブ自身も、 まるで泥棒のように嘘をついた。 たぶん彼は、真実の奴隷ではないという証明によって、 不信感を弱めようと考えたのだろう。 だが私は、あの老いぼれ悪党が、 もしイチジクの葉一枚が かつて海や陸で真実がまとったものすべてより大きいと 知っていたなら、真実の従者たちの筆頭であったろうとさえ 疑っている。 いや、ダビデはあの槌のような一撃を全人類に振り下ろしたとき、 裸の真実に仕えてはいなかった。 また、彼は的を射ていなかったのだ。 なぜなら、それはあり得ないと理屈が示しており、 事実が彼の顔に矛盾を突きつけているからだ。 人は皆うそつきではない、 なぜなら死んでいる人もいるのだから。 ―― バートル・クインカー
