水槽に閉じ込められたマスが、出口を求めて水槽の周りをぐるぐる泳ぎ回り、自分を閉じ込めるガラスに鼻を押しつけ、その囲んでいる牢獄を決して見ないように、貧しい債務者もまた、自分の周りには何も見えないが、自分を閉じ込める狭い限界を感じ、借金に苦しみ、それを逃れようと画策し、結局のところ、払ってしまえばよかったのだと悟る。 ―― バーロウ・S・ヴォード

アメリカでは当時、富める者が
貧しい者から金をむしり取り、
貧困層は借金の泥沼に沈むことが
多かった。

この辞典が書かれた時代の借金は、
個人の自由を奪う鎖そのもの。
水槽のマスのように、もがいても
出口の見えない苦境を描いている。
最終的には、払ってしまった方が
楽だったと悟る。
