その本性については、どうも定説がないらしい。

カストルとポルックスは卵から生まれた。

聖水をこぼした地面から自分が育ったと断言する。

アリマクサスが落雷で開いた地面の穴から生じたのは周知の事実だ。

私自身、酒蔵から男が出てくるのを見たことがある。

皮肉っている

卵から、頭蓋骨から、石塊から
といった記述は、当時の
古典的な知識や神話への言及だ
西洋の読者にはおなじみのネタだが、
日本でいえば、竹の中から生まれた
かぐや姫のような、
常識外れの起源譚と同じように
とらえてほしい

要するに、人が生を受けるという
最も根本的な出来事さえも、
笑いの種になるということだ
この辞典は、そんな「始まり」の
神聖さを疑う姿勢から始まる

The first and direst of all disasters. As to the nature of it there appears to be no uniformity. Castor and Pollux were born from the egg. Pallas came out of a skull. It is known that Arimaxus was derived from a hole in the earth, made by a stroke of lightning. Leucomedon was the son of a cavern in Mount Aetna, and I have myself seen a man come out of a wine cellar.
