私は寂しい墓のそばに立っていた。 そこはいばらに覆われていた。 森では風が嘆いていたが、 眠っているその人には聞こえていなかった。 近くに立っていた田舎者に私は言った。 「彼は風が吹いているのが聞こえないのでしょうね！」 「もちろん聞こえっこねぇさ」と彼は言った。 「そいつは死んじまったんだ。 動いているものは何も聞こえっこねぇんだよ。」 「全くその通り」と私は言った。 「ああ、悲しいかな、全くその通りだ。 どんな音も彼の感覚を呼び覚ますことはない！」 「まあ、旦那さん、それがあなたに何だって言うんだい？」 「死んだ奴は騒ぎたてたりしねぇんだ。」 私は跪いて祈った。 「おお、父よ、彼に微笑みかけ、 慈悲を示してください！」 その田舎者はその間ずっと見ていて、 そして言った。 「あなたは彼のことを知らなかったんでしょう。」 ―― ポベター・ダンコ
