解説

南アフリカの動物。
家畜化された状態では、
馬、水牛、そして牡鹿に似ている。

野生の状態では、
稲妻、地震、そしてサイクロンのようだ。

キュー出身の狩人が遠くで物思いにふけるヌーを眺め、こう言った。「追跡し、間近で面会してその血で手を染めてやろう。」だが、その獣は襲いかかり、隣に生えていたヤシの木のてっぺんに狩人を投げ飛ばした。そして、彼は宙を舞いながら言った。「正解だった。あの実に立派なヌーを怒りにまかせて、うっかり殺してしまう前に引き下がってよかった。」 ―― ジャーン・レファー

ヌーの定義は二部構成だ。
前半は、家畜化された状態と
野生の状態を対比する。
馬や水牛に似た家畜と、
稲妻や地震のような荒々しい
野生の姿。

続く詩は、この野生のヌーの
危険性をユーモラスに描く。
ヌーを狩ろうとしたハンターが
逆に投げ飛ばされ、
「怒りにまかせて殺さずに
済んでよかった」と
負け惜しみを言う結末は、
権威や虚勢への皮肉が効いている。
当時の植民地探検熱や
動物に対する傲慢な視点を
風刺した作品と捉えられる。

An animal of South Africa, which in its domesticated state resembles a horse, a buffalo and a stag. In its wild condition it is something like a thunderbolt, an earthquake and a cyclone.
