「アブラカダブラ」という言葉で我々が意味するのは無限の数の事物である。「何？」「どうして？」「なぜ？」さらには「どこから？」「どこへ？」といった問いへの答えである。 ――この言葉によって、真理（そしてそれがもたらす慰め）は、暗闇の中で知恵の光を求めるすべての者に開かれる。 この言葉が動詞か名詞かは私の理解を超える。ただ一つ言えるのは、それが賢者から賢者へ、時代から時代へと受け継がれてきた「不滅の品詞」であるということだ。 昔、千年も生きたという男の話が伝わっている。山腹の洞窟に住み（もっとも、ついには死んだのだが）、その知恵の名声は国中に広まった。彼の頭は禿げ、髭は長く白く、そして目は異様に輝いていた。遠方から哲学者たちが集まり、彼の足元に座って話を聞こうとした。だが彼の口から出るのは、ただ一言――「アブラカダブラ」――を繰り返すのみであった。 「アブラカダブラ、アブラカダブ、アブラカダ、アブラカ、アブラ、アブ！」 それがすべてであり、人々はそれこそを聞きたがった。そして各自がその神秘の言葉をせっせと書き留め、注釈を加えた本を次々に出版した。それらは膨大な量となり、知識の樹の葉のようにあふれた。 やがて彼は死に、書物も滅びたが、その知恵はなおも崇拝されている。 「アブラカダブラ」という言葉は荘厳に響き、まるで永遠に揺れ続ける古の鐘のようである。ああ、この言葉ほど人類の「一般的な感覚」を明らかにするものはない。

Mighty big books were these, In number, as leaves of trees; In learning, remarkable—very! He's dead, As I said, And the books of the sages have perished, But his wisdom is sacredly cherished.
