西洋の公衆浴場は、
しばしば衛生状態がひどかった。
湯につかる習慣が根付いた日本と違い、
この時代の入浴は、
清潔よりも社交の場や
享楽の対象だったと言える。
そのため、入浴を「神秘的な儀式」と
皮肉り、逆に不衛生だと
断罪するこの定義は、
当時の風潮への痛烈な批判だ。
