ユーモアの手法を一切使わず、
読者に最も湿っぽい気分を与えることを
目的とした詩作。

最も有名な英語の例は
次のように始まる。

下卑た犬が終日を告げる鐘の音を予告し、群れなす家畜がゆっくりと牧草地をさまよい、賢人は家路へと向かう。ただ私だけが残り、短調でくだらないことをしている。

「挽歌」は、一般に故人を悼む詩だ。
しかしビアスはそれを
「最も湿っぽい気分を与える詩」と定義し、
陰鬱な感情を強調する。

彼が例として挙げた詩は、
トマス・グレイの有名な「墓畔の
エレジー」を皮肉ったものだ。

原典では「犁を引く農夫」などが登場し、
詩人が夕暮れ時の農村風景を
しみじみと描く。
それをビアスは
「下卑た犬」「群れなす家畜」といった
俗っぽい言葉に置き換え、
詩人の姿勢を嘲笑している。

真面目な詩を滑稽に崩し、
読者を突き放すのがビアスの流儀だ。
