ハーストは日記をつけていた。 そこには彼の知恵と機知のすべてが書かれていた。 ゆえに記録の天使は、彼が死んだとき、 自らの記録をすべて消し去り、こう言った。 「お前を日記で裁こう」 ハーストは答えた。 「ありがたい！　私が第一級の聖人だと証明できるぞ」 そう言って、彼は死装束のポケットから 得意げにその日記を取り出した。 天使はゆっくりとページを繰った。 そこに書かれた愚鈍な文句も、盗んだ知恵も、 すべて見覚えがある。 陰鬱に、また嘲笑を浮かべながら読み進め、 やがて本を閉じて返した。 「友よ、お前は道を誤った。 墓のこちら側でお前は満足できぬだろう。 天国には“大きな考え”の居場所はなく、 地獄には“笑い”の余地はない。 ――よって、地上へ戻れ」 天使はそう言い放ち、彼を蹴り返した。 ―― 狂える哲人

Hearst kept a diary wherein were writ All that he had of wisdom and of wit. So the Recording Angel, when Hearst died, Erased all entries of his own and cried: I'll judge you by your diary.
