ある日、山の頂に登り、 夕陽が輝きながら沈むのを眺めた。 その光を見つめながら、ふと思い出した―― 「立派な逸話」がひとつ。 老いた男がロバにまたがっていたが、 獣の力はやがて尽き、 そこで今度は男がロバを背負い、 何マイルも運んで休ませた――という話。 やがて東の尾根から月が昇り、 その円盤を暗くなる西の空に掲げた。 それはまるで新たな天地創造のようだった。 そして私は、もうひとつの冗談を思い出し、 笑いすぎて涙を流した。 花嫁を見るために教会の戸口に立っていた若い女。 だが花嫁は――彼女自身だったのだ。 詩人にとって、自然はすべて崇高な思想に満ちている。 大地も、天も、海も語りかける。 それを理解できぬ愚か者を、私は哀れに思う。 ―― ストロンボリ・スミス
