ある日、私は山の頂に登った。 夕日が栄光のうちに沈むのを見るために。 そして、その消えゆく光を見ながら、 私は完璧に素晴らしい物語を思い浮かべた。 それは、一人の老人と、彼がまたがった ロバについての話だ。 その獣の力が試され尽くされるまで。 それから、老人はロバを背負って 何マイルも道を歩き、 ネディ（ロバ）はかなりよく休んだ。 我が駐屯地の東の丘の頂から、 厳かに昇る月は、 その広い円盤を、暗くなっていく西の空に、 目に見える新しい創造物のように見せた。 そして、私はある冗談を思い出し （泣くまで笑った）、 それは、ある怠惰な若い女性が、 花嫁を一目見ようと教会の戸口のあたりで ぐずぐずしていた話だ。 けれども、結婚したのは彼女自身だった。 詩人たちにとって、すべての自然は 壮大な思想、 つまり思索と感情を孕んでいる。 私は、この大地、天、そして海の言葉を、 理解できない愚か者たちを哀れに思う。 ―― ストロンボリ・スミス

The moon rising solemnly over the crest Of the hills to the east of my station Displayed her broad disk to the darkening west Like a visible new creation. And I thought of a joke (and I laughed till I cried) Of an idle young woman who tarried About a church-door for a look at the bride, Although 'twas herself that was married.
